I have two lap tops and desktop. I don't use the desk top, so I want to use just the laptops, but the modem and router are connected through the desktop. Is there a way to set up a wireless connection with out having it hooked up to the desktop??

yes plug the cat5 cable from the modem into a lan port on the wireless router his makes the router act as as a wireless access point instead of a router. or you could hook the modem to the wan port on the router and use it just the same. you will want to set the router up with the desktop connected so you know you can connect wirelessly then eliminate the desktop and see if you can access the router

If your router is wireless then yes, just disconnect the ethernet cable from the desktop and turn on or install the wireless on your laptops.

Thats it.....

Use a wireless router. You don't need anything else.
