We had this argument with my friends. One argument was that NFL players train to run the 40 so they would have faster times. European soccer players are not timed on this in training to be selected for teams. Also, some NFL players are world class track athletes converted to play football (i.e. Ted Ginn Jr). Soccer players are fast, but are they as fast as the fastest NFL players?

some soccer players would definatly compete for being fast, but the fastest football players are much faster than soccer, simpley because they practice the 40 more. If soccer players acually practiced the 40 more often, the numbers would be close. So pretty much, no soccer player can match the fastest 40 time in the NFL (it belongs to Deangelo hall with a 4.19 time)

I'm sure you could find a pro soccer player somewhere that is going to rival the 40 time of the fastest NFL player. Who it would be, I don't know - I don't watch soccer. But all those guys do is run, and I assume there must be some soccer player out there that can sprint with the best of them. I tried to find some 40 times for soccer players, but couldn't. So this is like "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop" - the world may never know.

I think Ted Ginn Jr and Calvin Johnson would both beat the fastest soccer player by ten yards in a forty yard dash

I had a similiar argument with a friend in school too. Even though i am a bigger soccer fan i think NFl players are much faster. Especially the Wide receivers and cornerbacks. For the exception of some soccer players NFL players are much faster
