socialism is a more broad term, communism is more specific. socialism is anything falling under the concept of "from each according to ability, to each according to need". This describes any system where all work, and all have their needs provided for them. Communism is much more finite. It is inherently classless, and everything is run by the worker. While socialism may have a state (from the USSR to quasi-socialized northern Europe), communism is fundamentally anarchist. Even in Marxist theory, the socialized state (ala the USSR) would eventual dissolve itself into stateless (anarchist) communism (although it never happened- Marxism-Leninism's core flaw). It's not so much a difference as an elaboration. All communists are socialists, not all socialists are communists.

It is a marketing thing.

Lenin started out as a socialist, after he slaughtered the useful idiots who supported him, the name socialist got a bad reputation, you know if you get them to follow you then kill them, well it is not exactly good for your reputation.

So in this evolution of evil, they changed the name of socialism to communism, same exact thing, just a different name, the thought being maybe people would fall for the marxist lies again, and voila they did of course until Stalin killed the followers who helped him, and then of course communism got a bad name.

So here we are 30 years later. Were did the evil socialist/communist go? Well today they are called liberals and democrats, same group as the leninists just a different spin. And the MSM supports them talking about how good liberalism is and how everyone will have equality and other such lies.

Same evil, different names.

It depends on who you ask. According to Marx, socialism is a stepping point to communism. In socialism, the workers own and control the means of production. In communism, everything is public and there is no longer any need for government.

I'm sure there are a number of differences. Socialism, for instance, doesn't preach violent revolution as the natural and inevitable way of accomplishing political change.

Both are basically egalitarian, utopian ideals, though. And, Socialism is often seen as a stop on the road to Communism, or, as a less extreme alternative to it..

Socialism is the romantic notion that you can get all people to want to share resources equally.

Communism is what you get when you try to institute socialism and the people are less than receptive to it.

Either way, the only thing shared equally is misery.
