If original equipment says 5w-30 then it's engineered to run on 5w-30. Newer cars's valves are hydrolic valves which mean they are ran by oil pressure. The W in 5w-30 mean winter it has nothing to do with the visvocity of the oil. The thickness is 30. The number before the W stands for winter not wieght.

If you're really compulsive about it you can test the viscosity using a viscosimeter, which is available from Fisher Scientific or other Science supply houses. The easiest to use are just a little scoop with a hole in the bottom - the time for the liquid to run out is a measure of viscosity. The measurement has to be made at the specific temperature that the oil is rated for.

i can tell you if its a 30 weight oil by rubbing it between my fingers. the best way you can tell if it meets the Society of Automotive Engineers standards is to look for the SAE on the lable. if you are buying it in large bulk and don't have a lab then there are lots of labs that can run a series of test that aren't too expensive.

Send a sample to a chemistry lab. It'll cost ya, but you'll know for sure. Or, buy quality oil, not cheap brands, they won't skimp, normally.

The only way I can think of is buying a viscosimeter or a viscometer. No idea where they sell those. Try ebay.
