My husbads truck (Chevrolet S10) recently stopped running, basically turned off on him and the gas gauge was not registering. We had it fixed today, the mechanic said it was the Fuel pump...620.00Dollars! My husband picked it up today and it did not even make it home, the same thing happened again. We towed it to the front of the mechanics shop,(he was closed) but we really want opinions ....has anyone else experienced anything like this???

He did replace the Assembly and fuel filter too.. I am not sure how he came to find it was the fuel pump, I am hoping he did diagnostics before...but unfortunatlely, i did not ask for parts back or for more of an explanation...I hope everything goes well and it was just a bum pump...We can't afford to pay anything else...You guys are awesome though, thanks for the info, very helpful!!!!

If it is the electric pump( you should hear the pump when you turn the key on your truck if the pump is good). and you hear a noise then the pump is not the cause of the issue.... it would be the plugs leading to it, the fuel filter or some other cause of it. It could also be a ground depending on the condition of the frame

Definitely sounds like a fuel problem of some sort based on what you've said, but I've heard of stranger things. It could be an intermittent electrical problem as well.
How did your mechanic determine that the fuel pump was the issue? I ask because they seldom just up and fail. They usually cause hard starting and poor acceleration as a warning prior to completely quitting working. Did he replace the fuel filter while he was at it?

By the way I think I'd look further into your mechanic's bill. $620 for a fuel pump and install labor on a pick-up truck is absurd! I would be expecting somewhere in the $400 range.

Good luck

Lesson one...never pickup a repaired vehicle close to closing time. Lesson number two...if the repair is not a rock solid guaranteed fix, have the shop owner or mechanic go for a road test to confirm it's fixed before you pay and let them know you'll be doing this up front. I suspect the mechanic figured if the gauge stopped working, the problem must be a bad pump/sending unit and just replaced it without checking other possibilites....too little info to tell what transpired but the problem could also be a bad ground or bad connector for the pump/gauge unit. A good shop will fix the problem and refund your money for the pump if it turns out that it did not need replacing.
Lesson number three....always ask for your old parts back before they do the repairs so there's less chance of a shop not replacing what they say they are. And if the shop's repair doesn't fix the problem, you'll have the old part to show another shop to see if it was bad.

I have no doubt the original problem was the fuel pump - these fail all the time on this vehicle in just the way you describe.

As for the second time... you could have gotten a bum pump. Stranger things have happened and some brands are definately better than others. Or it could have been an installation problem. No way to tell until they open.

I hope it wasnt dodgemans shop, that sounds like something they would do. Mis-diagnose it and get a used fuel pump from a junk yard and install it lol. I would take it back and call that shop when they open and tell them you are not very happy you paid that much for a fuel pump and ask them if they replaced the whole assembly or just the pump, you would never know because it's in the tank, for your sake I hope they replaced the whole assembly. The pigtails, which is the wiring harness that actually plugs to the fuel pump does go bad, I have seen this many times, and seen people condemn the pump when it wasn't. Ask the shop to do a fuel pressure test and post the results of the test so I can see if they are in specs, you will need key on engine off pressure reading as well as key on engine on readings.

Make sure you get your money back from the fuel pump since that didnt fix the problem. Sounds like you might have some electrical issues going on
