In life some people seem to enjoy complaining. What are the objectives or goals in complaining? What is the hope or desire in complaining to someone?

Im the rise n whine but my hisband is rise n shine. I dont LIKE to complain. I wake up constantly all night and need to take care of two young kids. I dont get nearly enough rest for the long days I have and it simply sux that I cant seem to stay asleep.

My goal in complaining is to talk out and consider my options, make a decision, and go with it.

Usually I just wanted to talk it out, I think better out loud. Or if I talk about it, it stops bothering me so much. I'm really not doing it for the sympathy (though that helps) or the advice (which I usually don't want). Just to talk.

I run into this with my wife from time to time. I typically view a complaint that is made to me as something that needs to be addressed or fixed. Like it is too cold in here or our neighbors don't pick up thier trash cans at night. My wife tells me that sometimes she says things like that just to voice her opinion or complaint not ever wanting me to fix something or actually change a behaivour. I think that if you complain about it more than once than it needs fixing. Either your attitude about it or it actually needs to be fixed.
