If you want it for a fairly long period of time the desktop is the way to go. Just make sure that you get one that is fully "upgradeable". That simply means that if you want to put more RAM in you can; upgrade the video or sound card you can.
Those things typically CANNOT be done on laptops. Sound and video are built into the mother board and RAM slots are very limited.
Not only that but I hated carrying a laptop around all the time. It was a pain in the butt.
I'd vote for the desktop.

If you don't need too much mobility, I'd go with the desktop. A top-of the-end desktop will have much faster processing speed and reliability than even the best laptop.
ie: You can easily get a computer with a dual-core processor or something along those lines, but you will be extremely lucky to find an affordable laptop that tops 3 Ghz.

I can use a laptop, store a lot of information and be able to walk from room to room, even outside while being connected to the Internet.
I can't take my desktop with me on the go, unless I am moving out of my apartment.
I can take my laptop anywhere with me, such as school, the park, to my friends house, in my bag, to the gym, etc.
What can a desktop do that a laptop cannot do?

Well that all depends what you want to use the computer for. If you want to play a lot of games or do video editing. A desktop would probably be better due the the cheaper price.
It just depends, if you want or need to be able to take your computer anywhere then a laptop is better. Just keep in mind that for the same price a desktop will be better. In other words the desktop will always be more powerful.

you can "beef up" a desktop more.
the portability of a laptop is great though.
i would say if you have no specific reason to get a laptop then go ahead and get a desktop. spec it out really high and put a lot of memory in it. it will last you a long time.
many times laptops have more problems because they run hot and if you do not condition the batter it will die and become useless.
I'd go desktop if you can do it. there is also more room for upgrade later.
if you need more help just email.

Desktop. They're better than laptops in every way (cost, speed, upgradability, and they last longer), except they aren't portable and they use more electricity. The fact that you're even asking this means that you don't need a portable computer and it would just end up sitting on your desk anyway.

It actually depend on what you want to use it for.. I have two laptops both Toshiba's I've never had any troubles with either one of them. I'm taking college courses so I often take one of my laptops to class with me. At least one laptop go everywhere with me. I also have several desktops that are hp's I also have never had any problems.
I think the first question you need to ask yourself is what exactly you are going to be using your new PC for..... and then go form there.

It depends on your needs. If you will need to bring the info from your computer around to different places, you might want a laptop. Desktops are cheaper and easier to fix.

a desktop is better for playing games (online). a laptop is obviously more portable. they will last about as long as each other. i built my desktop in 2004, and bought my laptop in 2005. both are still running fine.

A desktop will always give you more for your money, a laptop with the same processor, ram, etc. will cost more.
