Because one of the members of the platoon is killed, the story has a depressing mood. It shows that death can come suddenly and without any warning at all, in war, death cannot be avoided and you cannot protect those around you from it either.

They carry machine guns, rifles, grenades, strings of bullets, medicines, etc. etc. and still they cannot keep death away. Ultimately, as Cross discovers, the only thing he can not carry is his fantasy of life and love in the real world.
