Curbing an appetite and starving ones nutritional needs at the same time makes for an unbalanced system.
Coffee is one of the most effective vehicles for transporting vital nutrients to the liver. The liver is what produces the Bile to cleanse / break down the fat soluble food substances and flushing of the waste to be excreted.
Using coffee as a meal so to speak, to curb an appetite, is one of the most commonly used. I have had nothing but positive feedback with a vitamin and mineral fortified coffee. Many have even stopped using Hoodia and several other diet and suppressants. We've documented 3 - 4 lbs a week using this diet. I don't sell it, I offer it for free, it's a Certified ( by a FDA registered Independent Consumer Laboratory) healthy coffee recipe. It was developed for those who do this on a regular basis. www.vitabrewcoffee.com

Many people have a hard time telling difference between a stomach shrinking pain and a hunger. Here is what I mean:
Do you remember how full you felt after some Chinese buffet? Very full. Your stomach was stretched some. Then when all that food went down to your intestines, your stomach hurts a bit, therefore it feels like you are hungry. I would eat a little bit and use about a tea spoon of vinegar in a glass of water to kill the pain. It works for me every time.

When my tummy rumbles, I drink a large glass of water (with fruit in it if you can't stand water) then I wait at least 15 mins before I eat, and I eat one third less of what I want.
I've lost 15 kilos by doing that, and walking about 15 mins a day. I also cut back the soft drink, and that really helped.
If desperate for food, eat a few water crackers with nothing on them. But no more than 6 of them after 8pm.
