An acid is known as a "proton donor" where it gives a hydrogen in a reaction, while a base is known as a "proton acceptor" where it receives a hydrogen in the reaction. Also, the pH of acids is below seven while the pH of bases is above seven.

A really easy way to identify them is if they have an H+ ion then it is an acid (HNO3)

A base will usually have and OH- ion with it (KOH)
NH3- is a base also.
