Since this class only pertains to the U.S. before the Civil War, we can only draw our answers from that period.

Okay, at least for the beginning ...
The Puritans, especially in such areas as Salem in 1692, were VERY undemocratic. The witchcraft hysteria would never have happened in a democracy. Under strict Calvinism they believed in predestination-ism, and therefore God chose your eternal reward before you were even born.
The (first) Great Awakening was the beginning of the democratic movement because it allowed the individual to choose where they would spend all eternity.
