I love this question. There are actually two teams.

The 2001 SEATTLE MARINERS
The 1906 Chicago Cubs

Both won 116 in a season although the Cubs only had a 154 game season back then, therefore having a better average. A strange fact for this is that both of the teams did not win the World Series that season.

2001 Mariners and l906 Cubs with 116 wins and both did not win the World Series. The Cubs actually are better doing it on a 154 game schedule.

The other answers - the Cubs and Mariners - are correct if you're including only regular season victories.

If you include the playoffs, then it's the 1998 Yankees, who won a total of 125 including the playoffs.
