Hello Everyone. I have a question for ya'll regarding an 02' Tundra with the 4.7L V-8 and auto transmission and some funky starting. I drove about 5 miles and ran into a store, left this store, drove to another about 1 mile away, parked, ran in for 5 minutes then came back. When I started the truck, it started rather weakly. It didn't kill, it just sort of sounded weak. SO I drove home, which is about 2 minutes away, and decided to do turn it off, wait a few seconds and start it again. When I cranked the engine, it let out a horrible scream, sort of like when you hear someone start a car whose engine is already running. It didn't start, it just stumbled while screaming and didn't start. I tried again....same thing. I tired a third time...same deal. I lifted the hood, nothing looked obvious, belt in place. SO tried again...it started w/o mishap. I tried randomly throughout the afternoon, nothing out of the ordinary happened. I drove to work today and to the store. No mishaps. Any ideas?

I'm guessing that your starter throwout isn't always completely engaging the flywheel, that would give you the "it's already running" noise. That's usually caused by the starter not being perfectly aligned with the flywheel, which requires shims to fix; or a weak starter solenoid (which is part of the starter itself)

Unless you're a mechanic I'd take her in to be looked at. You may be able to afford a new starter but a new flywheel will set you back plenty if the starter chews it up!

Good luck

It could be the the battery. Remember when u get out of the car turn off everything. Because it still can drain the battery. but it might need a tune-up or u need to change the spark plug.

i own a shop and it sounds like the starter may be acting up on it,they will do this, when they start going bad,id keep an eye on it for a while and see if this happens again,if so start out with having the battery checked, and then the starter, and also see if its charging alright, this is one of those things that will have to act up again before you can find it,good luck hope this helps.
