It's simple. As a Senator and a candidate for the President of the United States, he is entitled to Secret Service protection if he is receiving threats on his life. He applied, and they approved it, after they investigated and confirmed the threats of course. You don't just get protection because you ask for it. The Secret Service determines themselves if there is a basis for protection. They obviously determined there was a need.

Barak Obama is below secret service secure practices no longer because of the fact of threats made against him yet because of the fact he's a presidential candidate. it fairly is commonly used technique. If he loses, and is not any longer a candidate, he loses his secure practices.

Presidential candidates are entitled to Secret Service protection. Perhaps there have been threats from some biggot or because of the huge crowds that come to see him it is just added protection just in case.

There were probably indications of some type of threat, also keep in mind that insurance company's will endorse this because, in case of an assassination they may have to pay for damages in some major cities (possible riots)

Because this is America, and we vote for our leaders here, we don't kill them to keep them from office. Everyone gets a fair chance at having a serious run for the White House.

He says because of racist threats. He is already making his campaign a race based campaign. He is just subtle about it. The first sign and a dead give-away was him bringing Al Sharpton into his campaign. Sharpton will attempt to start race riots if Obama does not get the nomination.
