A betta is really the only answer and that only if you are willing to change 100% of the water every 2-3 days.

No goldfish, they need far more space and proper filtration!

Personally, I don't think any fish should live in a unfiltered one gallon. Bettas will survive in it, but you'll never see them really live until they have at least 5 gallons to work with. And they still shouldn't be confined to something that's unfiltered. It shortens their life span by years, and I honestly think half of them die of boredom. I used to keep bettas in unfiltered bowls as well, until I researched them a little and found that they really should be kept in something larger. I had a betta in a five gallon, and he never really moved around much. After learning a bit more, I bought a filter and heater for his tank and he lived to be 7 years old as compared to the 3-4 years my boys typically lived.

I don't know why people think goldfish can live in those same conditions. Bettas are equipped to live in water with lower oxygen levels than goldfish. They can breathe from the surface with their labyrinth organ. Goldfish live in coldwater conditions, which hold quite a bit more oxygen, and no where in their anatomy do they possess a labyrinth organ. So, confined to a one gallon, all they'll do is swim around in their own toxic waste build-up until their gills are so burned and scarred that they can't get enough oxygen (In a unfiltered bowl? What oxygen?) and inevitably die. Water changes might delay this end, but I can pretty much guarantee that's what will happen.

I apologize if I seem harsh, but I hope that if you're going to go out and buy a new pet that you would at least give them proper housing so they can live as long and with the best of health as they can.

white cloud minnows can be used in a 1 gallon or guppies. Goldfish would not do well since the tank is too small. You could get another beta if you have a female. Other than that you are limited.

I think maybe a few guppies could live in a 1 gallon tank but you should go to a petsore and ask. Also, guppies will breed like crazy so you have to be careful.

i would by a fiulter no matter what. i would by a SUPER small goldfish with a filter. filters are not very expensive i bought mine for my 2 gallon tank for 7 dollars at petsmart (make sure you by the 1-3 galoon tank filters. or you can buy a gold tank, filter food chemical kit for 19.99 at petsmart. once your gold gets bigger make sure you put it in a much bigger tank (ten-30) with a bio wheell increasing the water capacity as it grows.

Even your typical "feeder fish" goldfish will grow huge. They should not be kept in such a tiny bowl. Bettas only.

yes a male betta does amazing in a fish bowl if you change out a cup of water every few days or so, i had mine for a wear befor it died, (got really cold outside and the heater broke) so ya i would recomend getting one of those nano heaters from walmart for when it gets cold

If you don't want a filter, then your tank will get pretty dirty very quickly. There are small filters that work for that small of a tank also. Check any pet store.
