alright i have a 2004 civic EX with 53000 miles. never had a single problem until i drove to san diego which is about 325 miles from my house. the temp is fine while driving on the freeway even at 80 mph, but when i stop or drive slower the temp gets hot. and it soon cools itself off when i start driving again. im almost positive its the thermostat. but i cant find a site that will describe how to change it. can someone give me an opinion. do u think its my thermostat? also when the car gets hot the fan doesnt come on unles i turn on the a/c. can u tell me how to locate the t-stat?

if it was the fans wouldnt it cool off when i turn the a/c on since that overrides the switch and makes both fans come on? i checked the fuse and its good. the fan will not come on at all unless the a/c is on and when it comes on the engine only gets hotter? is there something i can do, besides a mechanic that will let me know for sure?

Like they (above me) said. It's the radiator electric fan.

It's not turning on.

1) Blown fuse?
2) Bad relay under the hood?
3) Bad thermal switch?
4) Bad fan?

You should probably take it in to a shop soon and have the electrical checked out.
It may cost $100.00 or so, but that's a lot cheaper than replaceing a blown up engine if it overheats.

Here are a few more possibilities. Can you look down into the radiator and see the fluid circulating? If so, then your water pump is fine. Hoses can look fine on the outside and be collapsing internally at low speeds so check that too. Does your radiator cap hold pressure? Is there damage to the fan shroud? If all of these check out ok try checking the actual coolant temp with a thermometer. If it's not really overheating, then you need a new temp sensor. I think an internally collapsed hose is the most likely problem. If the car is fine at high speeds, then the radiator is not clogged and the water pump is working fine. One more possibility; Take it to a car wash and hose all the bugs, dirt, etc. off the front of the radiator and make sure the grill openings are unobstructed.

sounds like your cooling fans are not comming on as they should if it was the thermo it would be constant no mater how fast you went but sitting and it overheats but doesnt while moving is the cooling fans check fuses and the temp sending unit for the fans bet thats your problem in fact i know thats the problem

it could be a fan switch next to the t-stat that tells the fan to come on
