Rules of the Shotgun games vary from clique to clique. Shotgun is to call the front seat of the car when a group of friends is riding together. I always played with the "Blitz" if you call shotgun and someone says "Blitz!" then the race is on. First to take the seat, even by force wins the prize. The "Blitz" can be pre-empted by a "No blitz" following the call of shotgun. Drivers and owners of said car can overrule and shotgun calling.
A shotgun wedding is used as a term to describe rushed weddings, usually when the bride is pregnant. The term stems from the bride's father holding a shotgun to the grooms head, because he knocked daddy's little girl up and now they have to get married.

It means to call the up-front passenger seat in an automobile. It comes from the horse and buggy days when someone would sit next to the driver of a coach to protect the passengers or cargo inside. A shotgun wedding is a forced wedding, usually due to pregnancy. The groom is "strongly encouraged" to marry the bride usually by the bride's father.

To call shotgun is to announce that you want the front passenger seat in a car. A shotgun wedding is basically a wedding in which the bride is pregnant and "has to" marry the groom.

"Call shotgun" means that you get dibs on the front passenger seat in the car. A "shotgun wedding" is a marriage forced by pregnancy (taken from the caricature of a father holding a shotgun).

Riding shotgun simply means that you're riding in the front passenger seat. It became popular in the west when lot of bandits would rob wagon-trains. Especially those carrying either rich people or money. So there were two guys sitting up front in the wagon. If the wagon was attacked, one guy obviously would steer the horses and try to run away, while the other guy was "riding shotgun" and shooting at the robbers...

i don't know the one about the wedding, but if you 'call shotgun' it means you get to sit in the front (ie. passenger seat) of the car.

shotgun= you get the front seat of the vehicle you are riding (are going to be riding) in
also..."to be riding shotgun" means you are riding at the same of someone else, which means you aren't in control of the situation...
the quote I think may be referring more to the second meaning...I say shotgun, but you say wedding...
I say I am riding behind my spouse, but you say that is just the deal of marriage, you have give more than you take...
you have to ride shotgun...;P

the way we do it in my house is you have to be outside to call shot gun, then they get front passanger seat to where ever we go, but- if we stop some where for lunch or what have you, some one else gets shot gun, no one can have it for more than 2 stops...the nice thing about being a driver is that you get to make the rules as you go if you dont like them!
