He was born in the 4th century and captured by Irish pirates in his teens. Sold into slavery, he escaped six years later and returned to Britain. After becoming a priest, he is said to have made Latin the language of the Catholic Church, and made the shamrock the national symbol of Ireland. The National Museum in Dublin is home to a bell he supposedly rang. Today his feast day is celebrated with marching and parties.
