These are very good questions, and basic math that you need to know, as you encounter it all the time, so you'll end up getting really good at it.

The simple way to find out is to "cross multiply" which I'll show next. But if you think about it like this:

1/2 is equal to 2/4 right? This makes intuitive sense to most people. To make the 2 in 1/2 a 4, we multiply it by 2, so if we multiply the 1 in 1/2 by 2, we get 2, which is why 1/2 becomes 2/4 and not some other number of 4ths. Multiplying by 2/2 is the same as multiplying by 1, and 1/2 * 2/2 = 2/4

Now with 24/64 = ?/8, what do we have to do to 64 to make it an 8? Whatever that is, we need to do it to the 24 to get our ? value, and the answer to that is divide by 8, because 64 divided by 8 is 8. 24 divided by 8 is 3, so ? = 3 and we get 3/8. If you multiply 3/8 * 8/8 you get 24/64, so we can see our answer is right.

Now cross multiplying is usually the easiest and quickest way. The rule states that:

if a/b = c/d is true then ad = bc is also true

It's called "cross" multiplying because if you draw a line from a to d and one from b to c, you get an X across the equal sign. Algebraically, you basically are multiplying both sides by "a*d" to get rid of the denominators.

So we are given 24/64 = ?/8. If we apply the above, then it must be true that:

24*8 = 64*?

Then we can solve for ?:

? = (24*8)/64
? = 24/8
? = 3

If the last three steps confused you, then I would assume you haven't studied a lot of algebra and my first explanation above would probably be easier for you to apply for now.
