It is probably your monitor that is auto-adjusting to ambient light conditions. Better leave it as is, good for your eyes. BUT if you really want it off, disable it under the menu of your monitor.

You do not want to.

This is nothing to do with Vista, and is to do with the monitor.

In a flat panel monitor the monitor has to sample the analog signal to convert it back to a digital form to display in it's fixed grid of pixels.

It needs to sample the signal in the middle of each pixel from the analog signal, if it misses the middle then it can start sampling on the rising or falling edges of the signal as it changes from the value of one pixel to the next. This makes the edges look jittery and blurry.

What it needs to do this is the pixel clock. Unfortunately, back in '86 when IBM designed the VGA spec they did not realise this problem would happen, so the pixel clock is not part of the signals sent.

So the monitor has to recreate it from the video signals it has. It does this by recognising the resolution from the sync timings and then looking at the video signals to work out exactly where the center of the pixels are.

Generally once a monitor has seen one mode form the computer it will use the same settings it used last time. However, your monitor is not doing that, so it is better to give it a second or so to set itself up to give the best picture.

Auto adjust is a feature of your monitor. Try looking thru the menus on the monitor and see if there is an option to turn it off. Having it auto adjust makes sure the full screen is filled. If you are able to turn it off, you might need to manually adjust your monitor

This is why i bought the macbook. Problems like these with vista are soooo annoying. I removed vista from my pc right when i bought it, kept xp. Vista kept trying to adjust my screen and it even shrank the size of the screen. When i uninstalled it, my computer screen went back to original size.
