Barry Sanders is without a doubt, the best running back that I ever seen play the game (I'm 32). The best running back in the game today I would say is LT, because he can do it all. I think the best actual "runner" in football is probably Shaun Alexander.

Well due to the vagueness of this question I am going to answer it two ways.

Right now, it is LaDanian Tomlinson. That could easily change in the next two years though. LT had the best statistical season ever last year.

Walter Payton is one of the greatest of all time. Barry Sanders was also. Jim Brown played in a different time, so who knows what he would have done now. Gale Sayers was limited due to injuries. Emmitt Smith was surronded by greatness. Marcus Allen was a touchdown machine.

I think that the best overall running back of all time would have to be Barry Sanders. Everyone knew that the ball was going to him. He was a threat to score on every play.

Right now? I would have to go with everybody else. It is DEFINITELY LT. He can catch and run with the ball better than any other RB out there.

All-time?

(1) Jim Brown
(2) Walter Payton
(3) LT

Barry Sanders is not a top back to me. It's true he could take the ball to the endzone on any given play but more times than not, he lost 4+ yards trying to make a big play. Give me a running back that can go all-the-way but won't stifle my offense by putting us in a 2 and long situation.

Current or alltime? Barry sanders was the best of all-time, he could turn losses into giant gains best juke move ever. best active back is LT he can do it all he broke the touch-down record this year and a couple years ago had a 100 catches as a running back which is un heard of.

LaDanian Tomlinson, one of the top 5 of all-time, he's in the mix with Walter Payton, Barry Sanders and Jim Brown.

LT. If the Broncos had him, Elway might still be our QB. Heck *I* can hand the ball off.... And, yeah, Payton and Sanders and Dorsett and Dickerson were great, but LT is better. Reggie Bush is going to be great, but not for a while and he won't ever be LT.

As of right now it's LaDainian Tomlinson. But of all times that's a tossup between players such as Barry Sanders, Walter Payton and quite a few others as well.

Clinton Portis??? Are you people kidding??? He was a good RB in Denver, but so is any other guy they pull off the street and throw in that offense. He's nothing special in a Redskins uni. LT is the best RB in the league right now, his MVP award says so.
