Yesterday we started to here a high pitched sound on our second floor. We cannot tell where the sound is coming from or where it is comming from (directionless). The sound started as a short beep, but now can last anywhere from 5 to 15 seconds. Does anyone know what this may be?

Whe looked for the likely suspects (smoke alarm & clocks) and we are really unable to tell what direction its coming from.

Please help as this is driving my wife and me crazy.

One other hint is that we can here this on the outside of the house too, but not on our first floor or basement.....

i have a lose water pipe in my house that vibrates and make a high pitched sound. other things are TV's. the sound they make drives me crazy, but unless you have a huge tv, i doubt the sound would be audible from outside the house. if it doesn't seem to have a direction, then it is probably inside the walls, using them as a medium to travel. you should put your ear up to the wall and see if you hear it better. I really don't know what it could be other than a loose pipe, or how to find out where it is if it is a lose pipe.

is your heat and air unit in the attic of the second floor? we had sort of the same dilemma. the sound was directionless because we were hearing it through all of the a/c vents.
