The Prime Minister may request that the Governor-General (HM Queen Elizabeth's representative) call a general election at any time, although one must be called no more than five years since the previous election.

The PM asks the governor general to dissolve parliament.Or in a minority government an election can be triggered by a non confidence vote on a budget bill.
