It's all in the negative and camera placement. Double exposure if in film, pretty much the same if digital which will still require a matte shot. Here's a good resource for such questions to the Nth degree. For me, this counts for better than a college education in film or spending time in a special effects house if you've already got the film bug and the have a feel for this in the first place:

Probably the best resource of it's kind anywhere in the most succinct, presentable format known. You only need take your time with it trying to understand it.

Now a days it's done digitally (and simply)... film her once, and then film her again on green-screen and add the second image.

What was impressive was the ORIGINAL "The Parent Trap" with Haley Mills !! There they would expose only one HALF of the film with Haley talking to her "twin", then rewind, and expose the other half of the film with the "twin" talking to Haley.

It's Lindsay in every scene. They used different techniques to make her alongside herself.

They used a double in scenes where you can't see her face. For the ones you could, it was really her. She acted both parts, just at different times and those parts were fixed digitally so that she could appear alongside herself.

they film her at two different times playing two different parts, then merge the two. Easy enough to do. Not so easy to do it well.

They do it wiht all sorts of films. Not just for twins. (You don't think they filmed Star Wars on location, do you? heh heh ....)

oh it's just some video cut-n-paste method they put in. Same goes to Matrix (Agent Smith)

they shot the scene twice, and had her in a different position, then edited it to make it look like there were two of her.
