Custody battle with good Mom and bad Father?

Question

My friend is a mother of two and he children's Father wants custody of the children (who is the idiot).

He has a free lawyer and she has none because she lives with her parents, so it'll cost 2 grand upfront for her.

The true question is, how can she defend herself in court and keep custody of the two children?

everyone worried about the battle and nobody worried about the kids, figures they get forgotten about during these fights, shuffled from house to house to house never really knowing where they will be the next day. what a life poor kids. why dont she get a free lawyer? or start asking some friends and family for some financial support?
