The connection speed between your laptop and router is very fast when they are close to each other. Once there are obstructions and the distance increases, the speed decreases. BUT your broadband connection to your service provider is fixed (1mbps). That is your maximum speed in the net even if your wireless connection to router is 11mbps. There is really nothing to fix because there is nothing wrong w/ your set up.

I'm doing 54mbps right now on my wireless connection but my cheap DSL connection is only capable of <<1mbps. So, I still have a relatively slow speed in the net.

Maybe, some phones, microwaves, and other devices might be on the same channel as your WI-FI network.

Change the channel on your wireless router.
