The one time that I had to testify in a lawsuit, I was just asked to raise my hand and swear to tell "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth". There wasn't any book of any kind involved.

actually they don't make you swear on anything in court anymore! you just raise your right had and promise an oath to tell the truth or you will go to jail for perjury.

It's just a tradition/custom. Most christians don't actually believe in God...otherwise the world would be a much different place than it is now!

the part of the oath where it states if you swear "by god" is basically not included nowadays if you state to be an atheist and thus you just swear but just not in the name of god.
It is logical to draw the conclusion that you actually swear on your honour.

you wont . you will just swear to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth. you will just leave out the god part. otherwise it would infringe on your religious beliefs

They will give you a different oath, but you need to let the judge know ahead of time.
