Social Security was instituted under FDR as part of the 'New Deal.' The idea was to take money from working-age people who were then often engaged in saving (including stuffing thier money in matresses because they didn't trust banks) and give it to semi-destitute retirees. The retirees would spend said money, stimulating the economy. It's a straightforward aplication of Keynesian economic theory. I suppose you could call it 'demand side' economics. Keynes could also be creadited with the creation of the consumer economy.
Social Security didn't just take money from the young to pay the old, though, it promised to do the same for each generation as they got older. This practice - taking money from 'new investors' to pay 'dividends' to earlier investors - is called a 'ponzi scheme' and, if you were to set one up, you would go to jail just as soon as you stopped recruiting enough new 'investors' to keep up payments to the old.
So, you are forced to pay social security so that people who paid into it all thier lives will 'get back' thier money.

You are the only one responsible for your retirement. Social Security is a way of making you pay for someone else's. We have to pay it because there are lots of old gits running around and we can't just let them starve to death after they worked their whole lives to make the USA what it is today.

okay and then people with no children can stop paying for public schools
and
people who don't drive won't have to contrbute to having roads built and fixed when they get pot holes
and
people who never set their houses on fire can stop paying firemen
...
are you understanding now why we all have to pay. its easier if we don't have check forms of what out tax money can go for.
you aren't loosing anything. if you choose not to get SS thats your choice. its being offered to you.
if you are ever disabed and choose to not get disabilty because you want to be responcible for yourself thats fine.
you paid to have the right to have money for retirement and money for if you are ever disabled.
and you can have public schooling for your children if you have them and want them to go to PS.
you can call the fire department if you need them
the roads will be inshape and good for use even if you do not drive.
you choose not to use things and thats your choice, so jsut pay your taxes and make your choice on what social/gov services you will use

You can be. So quit whining. But there must be a safety net. We don't want anymore homeless senior citizens on the streets begging for food like we did before FDR passed Social Security.

Seems like President Bush asked the same question and tried to implement legislation to effect same. Liberals decried it and it was not passed.

Because the liberals believe that they know how to manage your money better than you do. That is why the socialist program is failing like most socialist ideas do.
