If you want the programs that go with those icons to run at startup, but just don't want the icons, then you need to go into the programs themselves, and look for things like "Properties", "Options", and/or "Preferences" in the drop-down menus. Somewhere in there you will find a tab with a check box for "Taskbar Tray Icon" which you can uncheck. Be sure to click on any "Apply" button you see as you back out of the little windows you opened, then "Okay". When you start your computer again, the icons should be gone.

Usually installed program put icons there. You can right click on the one's in question [one at a time] and bring up the associated program. Then you should look under options for that program and uncheck the box marked 'show in system tray' for each program you want to remove from there. Sometime programs are nasty and automatically put stuff there at startup. Remove those them from the startup folder.

The best way would be to click on Start, then Run, then type msconfig and click on the Startup tab. Now, uncheck all the un-necessary items on the list. You have to Restart your computer for it to take affect.
