cold is used for the first 24 hours to help releave swelling and inflamation after that warm packs can be used to help bring blood to the area to take away the dead cells from the inflamation and bruising. Just be careful with the rib area. If the pain gets worse or you develope other symptoms see your Dr. It is possible to bruise a lung or even fracture a rib. It is important to du breathing exersises right now. Take a couple of deep breaths and wrap your arms around your chest to support you ribs and take a deep cough. This will help revent pneumonia from not breating deep from the pain.

Apply cold packs or ice for 30 minutes at a time for a day or two following the injury to reduce any swelling, then use arnica cream or lotion on the bruise to speed healing.

Ice. it will help reduce the swelling. Also take some ibuprofen for the discomfort if you have nothing else. You can take up to 4 tablets at a time. That is the over the counter ibuprofen.
