further to earlier answers, the 4 great battles won by Admiral Nelson were Cairo, Ushant, Nile and Trafalgar. Though the mnemonic was never mentioned at school.

Assigning words to the letters of something you need to remember.
Example the planets: My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. (Of course I learned this back when Pluto was a planet. )
So a mnemonic is a device that uses and easy to remember phrase to help you remember something more difficult.

A phrase that you use to remember something. The one I use is "spring forward, fall back". It refers to which way to turn the clocks for Daylight Savings.
Songs or rhymes that help you remeber facts also fall into this category.

Merriam-Webster Online is also a wonderful resource... and there's the link for mnemonics.
BTW... the "M" at the beginning is silent.... like P in POOL! (Think about it for a minute, and you'll get it!) ;)
