Surface weather stations gather current weather conditions at a specific location. They store this information or transmit it to a data base. This is used to determine climatological trends. When your TV weatherman gives the weather along with the temperature highs and lows plus the records highs and lows and the normal highs and lows for the date. He determined this from a climatological data base.
