I watched the sitcom everyday as a kid, and I loved the physical comedy of Lucille Ball. I remember laughing out loud when she stuffed chocolates in her mouth in the candy factory, stomped grapes while making wine, and went on television twice to sell and then unsell her own salad dressing recipe.
However, as I've gotten older, and I've begun rewatching all of the episodes on DVD, I've noticed how the show is actually quite mysogynist. She's constantly screwing up and having to admit her wrongdoings and her basic stupidity to her husband. She goes to him for everything: including an "allowance." I know that's how things were back then, but its still awkward, to say the least, to watch.

I do enjoy this show. I watch it every now and then. Sometimes I see one I've seen before and then there are those times I see one I haven't seen. I do like the fact that Lucille and Desi were (I believe) the first inter-racial couple on television and that Lucille was the first pregnant woman on tv (the script for the show where Lucy gives birth to little Ricky was even checked by a priest, a rabbi, and a ...... -shoot, I can't remember- but this was done so that no one would get offended by it). Lucille and Desi even took pay cuts to have full ownership of the show. If you do some of your own research you may find even more cool things this couple has done.

None you mention, because they were crappy shows. (I watched them all as a kid, but now that I'm a grown-up, I can't stand them.) I'm a major Dick Van Dyke fan, however. Slot #1 in my CD player has whatever disk I'm at in the cycle. It's not because it's idyllic, but because it's good -- funny, smart, well-written, great characters, great plots, all that stuff that I watch things FOR. Roseanne's family ate dinner together. But that show was somewhat more realistic than, say, the Beav. If you're under the impression that the shows you name accurately represented any real reality, BOY are you living in a dream-world. BTW, the people in Lucy were really horrible, when you think about it: greedy, jealous, petty. Hardly idyllic (though sometimes very funny, I admit). Do the equality issues bug me (going back to Dick van Dyke); sometimes. But it was done in the time it was done. In some ways, it was ahead of its time, as Laura was smart and capable, and the relationship was often depicted as equal -- they talked about problems, he asked her advice about work problems. The "Sally's pathetic 'cause she doesn't have a man" stuff gets to me now and then, and some of the Rob/Laura stuff seems sexist to my adult in the 21st century eyes, but it doesn't make me avoid the show. I don't long for the past, where females were encouraged to pretend to be morons because men have to feel superior in every way; the bigotry of society then (in many ways and toward many groups). Enjoy the shows you like; just remember, they're fiction, not real.

Your really pulling some of us older people out with this question. I loved "I love Lucy" I thought Lucille Ball and my mother looked alot when I was young. I LOVED that show and can remember when even being a married couple they had to sleep in twin beds for the show because of censorship. Boy, how far things have came. How about when "I dream of Jeanie" she wasn't even allowed to show her bellybutton because of censorship. Those were the good ole days.
