The car has rims (I'm not sure, but I think they're 18s.) The tires are very thin.

Today the tire was making a sound like it was flat as I was driving. When I looked at it, it did not look flat (but hard to tell since it's so thin.) I noticed a bulge on one side of the tire and what looks like a gash on the other.

Can you help me out and tell me what the problem is please? Does this sounds like it needs to be fixed, and if so, will I need someone else to replace the tire because of the rims? My husband is deployed and I have no idea what is going on or how I would even fix the problem. Also, can you tell me how this might have happened?

This most often occurs by hitting a curb or something in the roadway, maybe even a bad pothole.
Rarely, it could be the tire was defective.
Yes, you need to take it to a tire shop and see that it gets fixed. You would not want it to blow out on you. Even if it did not blow out, it could create problems with your suspension if allowed to go for too long.
Go to a good tire shop and ask them what you asked here and they should be able to explain it to you and give you a free estimate of how much it would cost to repair. You will have to replace the tire and you want to have it balanced.
Be sure to ask if there is a discount for military wives who husbands are deployed, many shops will probably give you a small discount.
And be sure to thank your husband for his service for me!

There is no way to know what happened, you might have hit something. However you need to replace the tire with a bulge that is dangerous, and probably the one with a gash too.

Sorry to say but these are very expensive tires.

From what it sounds like from your description, you have a flat tire. Having a gash and a bubble in the sidewall sounds like you might have hit a pothole or curbed the tire causing it to fail. put your spare on and take it to a tire repair facility i.e. Goodyear, Firestone...

Sounds like you might have hit something. If its on the sidewall then you might want to go ahead and get it replaced.

Words of wisdom though. Take one of your guy friends who knows a bit about cars with you. If you dont have one then call up your husbands First Sergent to go with you. I know of a few places that tried to put one over on my ex girlfriend when she was taking care of my truck when I was deployed.

Yes I can help.

You drove on a flat tire until it got so hot that it shredded and blew out the sidewall. I see it almost every day. Time for a new tire.

You probably have a slipped belt in the tire cords and it lets air slip from one belt to another which makes a bubble under or between the belts, that is possiably where you are getting the bumping from.
You need to take it to someone who you can trust that deals in tires(maybe firestone store)and let them check it,because it could blow-out on you and maybe make you wreck.
Good luck and hang in there and i will pray for you and your husband,my son-in-law hasnt been back long and i am glad he made it back for my daughters and grandson.and me and my wife also.

Sounds like you need new tires ASAP. Don't drive on it unless you are taking it somewhere close to get new ones. I would even switch to my spare. If you do drive on it don't go over 40.
