I recently inherited this little go-machine from my grandpa, and I LOVE it! Of course, it has a few kinks to work out.
My main problem is the carburetor for the right cylinder. Either it's not letting enough air through or it's mixing in too much fuel. I want to try to take it apart, but I also don't want to break anything!
Does anyone know where I could maybe find info on this? I can find a parts guide, but no repair manual of any kind.
Also, if anyone has done this kind of work on this motorcycle or a similar one, that would help as well. The engine is a Yamaha 247cc. 2-stroke.
Thanks very much!

Microfiche (parts diagrams) -

Shop manual -

Search for - Yamaha
Then narrow your search to -1972
Purchase a shop manual before they go out of print. It was difficult to find this one.
Even if you don't do your own work, Buy One.
Motorcycle shops don't work on any bikes over 10 years old, because they don't have manuals and new mechanics don't know anything about them.

there are two directions to go in this repair:
To establish if there is too much or not enough fuel in the spark plug, take a spark pug reading as follows:
A) If it is dark at all, it is running on the rich side. You will also see an excessive amount of smoke while running
B0 If it is white or light colored, it is running lean
C) If the spark plug is "chocolate or a little lighter, the spark plug is ok.

There are 2 circuits in the carb, air and fuel, the probable cause is a blockage in the fuel circuit, due to old gasoline.

The solution is to disassemble the carb use carb cleaner, blow out every jet, hole and part you can find and then re assemble.
