Germany needed room to expand is the excuse that I have heard most frequently from history.

At first with the annexation of Czechoslovakia and Austria, he just played it off and hoped that the Western countries would just let him have it for the sake of preserving the peace. But when he invaded Poland and the Second World War started, he really didn't need to justify invading other countries.

There are two main reasons that Hitler gave . First is the he wanted "living room". Basically a buffer between Germany and every one else. The second is that he wanted to unite all the germanic people into one nation.
