I have eMachines T2865 desctop PC it has 512 MB of memory and I want to add 1GB more. I looked up the type of memory card that I have (PC-2700 DDR333 184p DIMM). Can anybody explain what those letters and numbers mean and if I would buy a PC2-5300 DDR2 240p DIMM would it work with my PC?

no ddr2 wont fit 2700 ... thats the old ddr ... use the memory tester at crucial.com to see what u need .. really, ur pc probably has dual channel so u need a matching pair in the right slots to get the best performance ... either 2 512s .. or 2 1gigs' .....and u should prolly go with 2700 ... u can check ur motherboards specs and if it supports it maybe get 3200 ...

Chances are such parts are obsolete and have no commercial interest and you can't get additions. But you can still try by taking out the original and show the local stores and say "I want buy 1 gb of these".

The PC-2700 is a grade designation, for the DIMM stick is a DDR type running 333mhz, there are 184 metal contacts, that's 184p for pins, you need something physically suitable and depending on the grade of the eMachine itself, exact match of the two grades likely be needed. So your suggestion of what to buy for addition is wildly incompatible.
