My friends brought a small snake over to my house to find out what it was and i could not identify it. I live in CT, it was a light grey color with yellow/orange belly scales and a yellow/orange ring around its neck. Is it a rat snake? Corn? Or is it something i should tell my friends to put back?

Sounds like a Ringneck snake, Diadophis punctatus. It's completely harmless but you should still put it back. Wild caught snakes can be difficult to acclimate to captivity.

Hello..no matter what it is ...the snake should & NEEDS to be put back ..nothing wild should ever be kept, especially one ya can't identify & could be poisionous, babies are as poisionous as their parents or any other adult snake..Yikes !! But in answer to what kind, no idea ..not from your area, you might do a net search of your local snakes, etc tho . Take Care :)

Sounds like a rat snake. If your friend has not had herpetology experience, I would urge him to put the snake back were he found him.

definatly a ringneck snake, they are fun because they very rarely bite, but they normally don't do well in captivaty, so I would let it go.
