That girl is not a coroner, she is a deputy coroner. Coroner is an elected position, meaning anyone can run and be elected. He father ran, possibly against someone, and won the election. He now can name people to be his "deputies", meaning that in the event he cannot respond to a call of death, he sends one of his deputies. This man cannot perform autopsies, he can order one to be performed by a forensic pathologist, but he doesn't perform them. A medical examiner (ie forensic pathologist) is the one who has a medical degree and performs autopsies. This requires 7 years of schooling.
In most counties of every state, the coroner is elected and is not required to have any medical background, he could be a farmer, and as long as he is elected, he can be coroner.
A medial examiner is the one with the degree and performs autopsies and issues a cause of death. All a coroner does is respond to the call and make the determination if the person should be autopsied or not.

You have to get an MD degree first, do an internship; then a residency and then specialize in forensic medicine. I would guess about 8-10 years.
