There is dispute about which way a lucky elephant holds its trunk, but there is a general belief in many eastern cultures that an elephant with the trunk pointed up "stores" luck and one with the trunk down "dispenses" it.

I found a couple of sites that may help.

My sister-in-law refuses to have a statue with the trunk down because she says it is bad luck. Personally I believe in no superstitions and think superstitious people are stupid. However, it would be extremely bad luck for the elephant if it could not put it's trunk down to drink.

In Feng Shui, placing an elephant with the trunk in the down position near the main entrance of your home, indicates protection and/or power. Place it in an office or study to activate the energy of study and curiosity.
