I have quite an unusual situation. I dropped out of high school in my senior year, and I went directly to community college in the Fall. After two years, I applied and was admitted to the University of Washington. I'm just finishing my junior year right now. The problem is this: I don't have a high school diploma, nor do I have a GED. Should I take the GED test or not? I'm going to graduate from college in a year (possibly two). The very fact that I go to a university implies that I am capable of doing work well above high school level. But yet I'm concerned that employers might question why I dropped out, and perhaps think that I'm a quitter. On the other hand, employers might be impressed that I took the initiative to work hard, change my ways, etc., following through on my goal to go to college when others thought it was unrealistic. I'm 21 now, almost through college; what should I do? By the way -- I'm a Psych. and English major.

The funny thing is, you might need a high school diploma or GED, despite having a college degree. You know how bureaucratic some things can be. So go on and take it. What do you have to lose? Clearly you will pass it easily. Besides, the same employers who will be impressed with your initiative will think no less of you when they see you have covered all of your bases.

I'd say it's up to you. As far as "needing" it I'd say no and back that up with the fact that I dropped out at 15, never went back and have never had that fact affect a job.
I’ve worked for Boeing (15 years) and now the DOD. I have three college degrees and have found that most employers just look at that fact; they look to see that you have the piece of paper, and that you stuck with something for two to five years. I’ve never had one even check a transcript.
