Gee, and here I thought you guys frothed at the mouth whenever "Rabid Right Fundamentalists" talked about "REAL [read: "true"] Christians."
So I guess the only "true" Christians are the ones who aren't "Rabid Right Fundamentalists." Did I get that right, hypocrite?

This is a very good, but a very tricky, question amigo. I am afraid that the idea of an essentially moral and benevolent Bible may be a joke, and that it is little surprise the religions arising from it are bigoted, vicious and violent. There are passages attributed to Jehovah that are so horrific it's no wonder that people who think it's permissible to do what their god does are barbarians (see Deuteronomy for an example or two.)
When people make Abrahamic religions decent and kind (as the Jews, Quakers and Unitarians have done) it's often despite the Bible or by tweaking it with "additional scripture" such as the Talmud.
I'm sorry, but the best way to "reclaim" a decent Christianity is by changing the Bible itself, AS THOMAS JEFFERSON DID WHEN HE ELIMINATED EVERYTHING SUPERNATURAL AND KEPT ONLY THE ETHICAL PARTS OF MATTHEW, MARK, LUKE AND JOHN. The "Jefferson Bible" should become THE Bible.

there is hatred and bigotry in pretty much ANYTHING WRITTEN A THOUSAND PLUS YEARS AGO.
Fortunately for the world, most religions have become more enlightened over time.
Unfortunately for the world, Islam is not one of them.
a few random Christian far right nut jobs compare in no great way against the onslaught of Radical Islamo-Facists and the hateful, violent message and ACTIONS (notice the difference) they purvey to the world. It's amazing how apologists like to focus one group (xtians) while ignoring the greather threat of the other (radical islam).
Rabid Right Fundamentalists do not even attempt to justify their actions by reference to Christian Sculpture or tradition.
They are Not acting on mainstream Christian Teachings.
and furthermore there are not large Christian groups around the world dedicated to implementing the same teachings.
can you say the same about the group you always choose to ignore??????????

Unfortunately, Christians who try to live their lives as authentically as possible, meaning as close the life that Jesus preached was ideal, are not going to be heavily involved enough in politics to reassert their right to exclusively hold the mantle of Christianity. Most of the truly spiritual Christians, don’t want anything to do with government (i.e. the whole line of rendering to Caesar what is Caesar and render to God what is God). Their view is that change in humanity can only be induced by living to emulate Christ’s example, not by coercing change through legislation, which is what the disingenuous “Christians” of the Bush, Haggard, Falwell, and Robertson variety try to do.
You are correct in that an authentic Christianity is anti-war, or at least against wars that are done for unjust and self-serving causes. You are correct that everything the Republicans stand for, at the moment, are absolutely the antithesis of Christ’s central teachings.
Unfortunately the American people are more well versed on Monday night football, than the religion they overwhelmingly profess they believe in. That is why Bush and his cohorts can get away with starting immoral acts of aggression abroad, and do it all under the guise of being good Christians.
Like most of our other faults in this country, we can lay blame on American’s ignorance and intellectual laziness for allowing the neoconservatives to commandeer Christianity for their own nefarious purposes.

I do stand up for Christ and the Holy Catholic faith.
NOW... the New Testament is what you wrote. BUT, the Old Testament is filled with war, some racism, and a lot of hatred. Sorry, but it's very true.

Ah you have not read it then? The old testament is where the best stuff is, like all the rules. The new testament is a promise. Revelation will fill you in on how Christ will return. No more of that touchy feelie stuff. Just swords and blood to a stallions mane.
