We filled it about 6 months ago and then left it. then my dad chucked a few water plants in and our goldfish! They seem ok but the water really doesn't look healthy. Some of the pond plants have died too and have had to be taken out. What do you suggest?

This is my favorite subject. You need better bio-filtration with a UV light.
I don't know how big your pond is but here is what I recommend.
UV filter
Pondzyme Plus
..........Pump for bio/UV filter..............
use magnetic drive they have no oil and the only thing you ever need to replace is the impeller
.................For good prices..............

...............PondMaster Pumps

Get the fish out because that green algae (like split pea soup) can deprive your fish of oxygen/and they die.
Empty about 1/3 of the pond install the above and then put the fish in.
It will take about 2 or 3 days to make the water crystal clear.
Keep the pump running constantly
and clean the filters at least once a day
Pondzyme Plus read info

Stagnant water, like your pond is now, is a great place for all kinds of nasty critters, like mosquitos, to spawn. But since you have fish, they will eat the larvae for you. This, however, will not stop bacteria from flourishing in the pond. Creating a small current is simple: Add a fountain. Just a small one, it will create a current that will keep the bacteria in check. The fish and plants won't mind at all. As for the plants dying, many factors could be causing this. Ask your local nursery for more information and make sure to tell them if your pond is lined or not, and how it's lind if it is.

Decent Pump/ Filter..invaluable...If you want a Quick cheap easy way to remedy the situation till you can afford a decent set up then just place a hosepipe in the pool and run it gently for a few hours till the water clears, I hope your water supply is not to full of chlorine as this may affect your goldfish,
& hope the water has somewhere to drain away ?..This method also ensures you do not disturb sediment in the pool bottom & should last a few weeks ..All the best..Smiffy

You may be overfeeding the fish which raises the ammonia level through the roof. You need to have a pH test kit for your water, check it and make appropriate chemical changes. You should have a filter of some sort. Any current created by a pump will keep the green junk from growing. It is stale water and sunshine that produces algae.

Try installing a aerator. I'm sure you've seen them in other ponds. The sit out in the middle and look like a fountain but they actually help keep the water clear. Plus you get the benefit of a nice looking fountain effect.

No never, plant life take in food from the water and co2 it is mandatory for many plant growth if the water is green that is an uncomplicated sign of sturdy water allowing algae to enhance freely. including a sufficiant uv clear out will kill maximum micro organism passing with the aid of using uv mild in turn making algae growth particularly complicated. additionally attempt including some snails to the water to consume the algae yet maximum fish will consume small snails. plant life have not something to do with the algae growth.

it could be algae, horrible stuff!, best to put a fountain or waterfall in to keep the water moving, this will also pervent the water form freezing over in winter. otherwise you need to clean it out reguly and/or buy a clean pond product from your local garden centre. hope this helps!
