The best are Nod 32 and Bitdefender, but they're not free.

There are 2 good free anti virus, only install one as both these run in the background;
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ -AVG anti virus or
http://www.avast.com - Avast Antivirus
http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/site/Main/view/Download-Free-Products.html - Bitdefender version 8 doesn't run in the background and can be used as a second back up anti virus, its now available as a free download.
You also need all these anti spyware programs, an anti virus won't find or remove most spyware;
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5 - AVG anti spyware
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

We have tried many , and my other half is in IT so he cannot afford not to have the right thing , and after trying several we have found that its best to have a few different ones to compliment each other , as what one may miss the other may find.
As the main one we use Kaspersky , its really great in all manner of things , but to back that up we have Ad aware which is free , and spybot search and destroy , many of which are available glitch free at download.com it works to run each of them and then any thing each of them miss is usually picked up by the other, to be honest the latter two are removal tools, but kaspersky tends to stop a lot of things...
Good luck what ever you choose.

It relies upon on which software has greater as much as date "virus definition" data. Any answer is a wager. i might wager the av-xp is proper till the McAfee application is as much as date too. reckoning on the severity of the an infection, it may be proper to flow away it on my own. Anti virus application has exchange into worse than the virus themselves.

For free software I'd say either AVG or Avast. Not much in it but I prefer Avast.
For paid-for software I've only had experience of Norton & McAfee. McAfee wins hands down.

I have used many in the past but I have settled down with PCCillin. Not free but you get what you pay for, and it's a great complete system which works a treat!
You can try it for free to see for yourself.
Try it now, it's won awards too!
