C6H6 is the chemical formula. It is a aromatic hydrocarbon.

Other attributes include colourless, high melting point, and slightly sweet smelling.

Benzene is the simplest cyclic aromatic compound. I say simplest because there are other smaller aromatic compounds but these are rather unstable and are difficult to isolate.

Benzene (C6H6) is an essential compound in organic chemistry and has several classes of derivatives from which many handy compounds can be derived. In fact, almost any functional goup can be attached to a benzene ring (aldehydes, ketones, carboxyillic acids, amides, amines, esters, ethers).

Benzene is also unique because it is very capable of doing several different types of organic reactions due to its very electron rich conjugated pi system. Basically, since the ring is made up of alternating single and double bonds, it is not only a conjugated systme, but provides several resonance possiblities as well as a very well equiped system to obtain a charge seperation.

I am sure that you could look this up just as easily as ask the question on this forum. Benzene does little else than burn (and even then it produces a heck of a lot of soot) with any enthusiasm. But I expect that are expected to discuss electrophilic substitution, so that is the starting point of your search.
