Cut pieces of brown paper to the size of the pictures you'd like to hang.
Position the paper on walls, using tape to secure your arrangement.
After making sure the papers are level, make holes in the wall and hang your pictures.

If you are only hanging one picture, then the level (laser or not) is the way to go. But if you're hanging more than one pic, the whole level idea is good, but not enough. Unfortunately, the wires on the back of pictures are not always the same length.

So use the level to determine where the TOP of the pictures will be. Then put the hook at the end of a tape measure under the wire. Lift the picture with the tape measure and note the distance of the hook to the top of the picture. Make sure you lift it as you want the measurement while the wire is taut - just like it will be when you hang it. That will tell you how far down from your level measurement to put the nail.

If your picture is less than about fifty to sixty pounds you can use steel heavy duty needles. Of course you need a level and a light weight hamper. But steel needles can handle the weight and won't leave a big hole in the sheetrock or wood wall. You can paint right over the small needle hole and other hanging devices require a patch or worse.

You could try a laser level. It projects a level line onto the wall you're wanting to hang the pic(s) on.

Do you really mean 'hand straight pictures' OR hang pictures so they are straight?

If its the latter, try using a level. You might also use two picture hangers instead of just one. It helps.

If you use two picture hooks intead of one, the picture will stay level. Place the hooks a few inches apart or several inches apart, depending on how long the hanging wire is.

$10 at lowes. They sell laser picture frame levelers. You put the thing on the wall, and it shoots a laser pointer out on both ends to show you where to put the nails.
