All birds have a cloaca. This is a single aperture used for excreting as well as sex. In mating they bring the cloacas together and sperm passes from the male to the female. Some birds, ducks for instance, have a rudimentary penis associated with the cloaca and the male inserts this into the female.

The cloaca is under the tail. If you look at a dressed chicken, the parson's/pope's nose is the base for the tail feathers and the cloaca is below that.

the female gets laid by the male just before she lays the egg to get it fertilized
