Alpha decay is the emission of an alpha particle (He nucleus), 2P2N. The result is a reduction in atomic number of 2 and a reduction in atomic weight of about 4.

Beta decay is the emission of a Beta particle (electron). The result is an increase of 1 in atomic number while the atomic mass stays essentially the same.
