Do you die, or do you become one yourself? If the latter, when? And no, I don't believe in vampires, I'm just curious as to how the myth goes.

If they suck enouh blood, you die. If they suck a little, you become one of them.
The story behind vampires, mainly count dracula i have recently read about. In the 1400s, Vlad the impaler would torture people. He would usually impale them with a long stake and set them out for all to see. If you looked upon these bodies with a face of disgust, the same fate would become of you. Vlad would eat near these corpses, and was said to actually eat the flesh of them too. I am a bad story teller, but on Saturday I came upon this website. You might get rabies if a vampire bat bites you, but I don't think any live in the USA, despite a horror film I once saw.
According to the myth you are referring to, a vampire bite may or may not cause the victim to become one. If too much blood is taken at one time, they simply die. If the vampire feeds on the same person over a series of nights, they may become one after they are apparently dead. According to the legends, there are several other ways a person may become a vampire.
I think there are real vampires, both living and dead (spirits), but they don't bite and they don't suck blood (just energy), and they do not turn their victims into vampires. They just become weaker and weaker over time, and may finally die.
Oh, there are those gothic people, but they are just playing at being vampires, and some of them do get their teeth fixed as fangs and do drink blood, which is a very risky thing to do - FOR THEM.

it really depends on the mythology (and the amount of blood drained), the anime hellsing states that when a vampire drains one completly of blood and doesn't replace it with their own they become a ghoul (animated dead minion of vampires) and if they do replace the blood with some of there own then the victim becomes a vampire. further in vampire masqurade if drained completely you die, to become a ghoul the vampire must give a living being its blood. though most european fiction state that when bit by a vampire nothing happens (again unless drained or blood is replaced with the vampires).

One myth is that it only takes one bite.
Another is that the vampire has to get you to drink his/her blood, after they bite you (interview with a vampire)
And yet another says that you have to be bitten 3x before the turn can happen.

You become a vampire instantly and go around looking for other people to become vampires.....only way to kill is with a silver bullet..or a stake..with a cross

You die, the only way to become a vampire is for the vampire to suck your blood and then let you suck his blood.

If the vampire drinks all of your blood you die.
If they just bite you or leave some blood, then you become a vampire.
