Many Americans, left and right, do think that might is right and that the rest of the world should obey. But the US government has not had a real victory since 1945. Korea was a stalemate. Vietnam was a defeat (despite what many think) because we did not get what we wanted. VN holds the battlefield. Iraq? Ha ha ha! First, Jesus did not come, Rapture Bush and fans away. US oil companies did not gain control of the oil fields. Shi'ites friendly to Iran took control. Those are not marks of victory. Aghanistan? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Afghans have defeated all invaders for the last 200 years, because they have some of the highest mountains of the world and the people are real stubborn about doing things their own way, which includes throwing out foreign invaders. US governments are successful in making ordinary Americans very submissive and obedient. Lately they've been successful in imposing a lightly disguised authoritarianism on the ordinary Americans. The masses seem to be content with bread and circuses (=gun, gay marriage, legal pot). What next? Authoritarianism until the sun goes out? Decades of Bosnian-style civil war? I don't know.

culture wars will go on as long as freedom to be ignorant exists. ignorant is defined as...what the other guys opinion is.

fully informed thoughtful decisions are the stuff that we can only dream of. new information is always available (to the open mind) and this can alter our thoughts. which may require the modification of a decision. (as you can see, it's not a simple answer if you think it through)

when it comes to decision making, some will have a better record than others. just as a side note...consider this...at the start of the Iraq war, some polls put the presidents approval rating at 90%. now it's around 30%. is it because that 60% got informed and thoughtful; or, bored and impatient?

Because this is the United States the cultural war will go on as long as the country remains free and under the protection of the Constitution. When everyone has to agree on all cultural issues, the United States of America as we know it will cease to exist.
Rja, I don't know where you come from but American culture pretty much dominates the world these days. If you think we don't have any culture you must be living under a rock. If you think some elitiest culture is better I hope you're not partaking of any of our great American culture. That includes music, the arts, higher education, sports, movies, food, system of government, freedoms of the masses, revolutionary ideas and inventions to better mankind, and literature.

"cultural war" - I wasnt aware there was one. The only "natives" are American indians, other than that we are ALL immigrants, even is many generations ago.

"When will Americans make fully informed thoughtful decicions?"

Never- there will always be ignorant and lazy people.

America being the FREE country it is will always have a cultural war. The freedom we process allows people of all beliefs to live here and most have differing opinions on how our country should be ran. Because of this, most of the time we do the right things in the world. The Neo-libs keep the Neo-cons from going to far and visa versa. This is the greatest country in the world for that reason. Anybody that says it's not should try and live somewhere else. They'll be banging at the door to get back in in no time.

I think the culture wars will continue just as they always have.. And, to expect that all Americans will make thoughtful and informed decisions, is being overly hopeful, I'm afraid.

Culture has it's dynamic aspects. Lately, it'd been fashionable to characterize them as a 'culture war.' I'm sure the term won't remain in favor long.

OMG, It's just beginning. The right wing Christian zealots have way too much power in the media, the government, in our schools and in our textbook publishing corporations. It's only beginning. They are dumbing down our children in favor of some stupid creationist ideas. They are not going to let go of power in the near future. I can tell you this, the end of the cultural war and the war of the right wing against our democracy will not end in my lifetime. They are far too motivated to have a theocratic government in this country. We, the thinking and educated people, have to be diligent and fight back with all our energy against this right wing monster. It's going to be along fight too. People are going to laugh at what I'm saying but they have no idea as to the extent and depth in which the right is in power in this country. It's frightening. And, now they are getting ahold of our military.

We don't get to make the decisions, we're not rich enough. The only role we play in the decision-making is providing the ruling class with tax dollars and canon fodder.

It only looks that we. We're so used to nice, smooth and nifty like on TV we actually think that's how it works. It's a myriad of ways in a myriad of things called life. We each find our way. Individually. Because that's what we are. Not just a number or a piece of meat. And don't let anybody snow you otherwise. But above all, don't fret, sweat, and HOLD!
